OPENING PLENARY, starting at 5:00 pm

Join us for the kick-off event of the 2015 Skoll World Forum! Jeff Skoll, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Zak Ebrahim, and others will help us explore this year’s theme: ’Belief.’  In the face of huge obstacles, constant setbacks and a system set at status quo, remarkable individuals are determined, each day, to make personal sacrifices for the betterment of a more equitable and just global society.

Our opening plenary at New Theatre begins at 5:00 pm and doors open at 4:30 pm. Seating is general admission.

PERSPECTIVES ON BELIEF
MODERATOR: Jacqueline Novogratz - Founder and CEO, Acumen

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond M. Tutu is often described as South Africa’s moral conscience and is a global champion for human rights. A passionate and compelling speaker, Tutu took the anti-apartheid struggle to the world. In 1984 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, and later chaired South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission to examine apartheid-era crimes.

Zak Ebrahim - Author, The Terrorist’s Son: A Story of Choice. When Ebrahim was seven, his father shot and killed the founder of the Jewish Defense League, Rabbi Meir Kahane. From behind bars his father, El-Sayed Nosair, co-masterminded the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. Zak now dedicates his life to speaking out against terrorism and spreading his message of peace and nonviolence.

An emotional highlight of the week, the Skoll Foundation invites you to attend the Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship to honor the 2015 Awardees and to celebrate all those who are working to create a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world. Special presentation to Mrs. Graça Machel, recipient of the Skoll Global Treasure Award. Doors open at 5:00 PM and seating is General Admission.

Graça Machel
- Chair of the Board, Graça Machel Trust.  Mrs. Graça Machel, is a renowned international advocate for women and children’s rights and has been a social and political activist over many decades. She currently serves in various capacities in several organizations, among them the Elders, the Africa Progress Panel, and the UN Millennium Development Goals Advocates Panel. Through these positions and independently, she continues to support efforts aimed at realizing the rights of Africa’s children and women on a number of key fronts.
